The Ones grundades 1965 av Edgar Froese. En av de första banduppsättningar var: Volker Hombach (saxofon, flöjt, fiol), Lanse Hapshash (slagverk), Kurt Herkenberg (bas) och Edgar Froese (gitarr). Tangerine Dream spelade sin första konsert i januari 1968 i Technische Universität Berlins matsal.
De band ontstond in Berlijn, toen Edgar Froese in 1967 een aantal musici om zich heen verzamelde: Charlie Prince (zang), Volker Hombach ( saxofoon, dwarsfluit en viool), Lanse Hapshash ( slagwerk) en Kurt Herkenberg ( basgitaar ). Froese was destijds beoogd gitarist van de band.
The first lineup of Tangerine Dream formed later that year, with Froese on guitar, bassist Kurt Herkenberg, drummer Lanse Hapshash, flutist Volker Hombach, and vocalist Charlie Prince. The quintet aligned itself with contemporary American acid rock (the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane), and played around Berlin at various student events.
