Begum Akhtar, also known as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi, was a well-known Indian singer of Hindustani classical music, most famous for her renditions of the Ghazal, Dadra, and Thumri genres.
Begum Akhtar was a refined Ghazal singer and was called as Mallika-e-Ghazal or the Queen of Ghazals. Her style of singing is inimitable and few can match upto her style. Most compositions were self composed and based on Ragas. Begum Akhtar performed last in a concert in Ahmedabad.
Begum Akhtar’s voice covers a wide range of ghazals composed by poets like Mirza Ghalib, Meer Taqi Meer and Momin Khan Momin. Her exposure to singing for films and experience with Indian Classical music allowed her to hone her skills as a singer.
