Jonathan William Patrick Aitken (born 30 August 1942) is a British author, Church of England priest and former Conservative Party politician. Beginning his career in journalism, he was elected to Parliament in 1974 (serving until 1997), and was a member of the cabinet during John Major's premiership from 1994 to 1995.
Jonathan Aitken is a former Cabinet Minister, MP, ex-prisoner and now priest and part time prison chaplain at HMP Pentonville. He has written 16 books, including biographies of Nixon, Thatcher and Newton, and campaigns for prison reform and social justice.
The Revd Jonathan Aitken has had one of the most high profile and colourful careers in British public life. His career has spanned the worlds of books, newspapers, television, business, politics, Parliament, prison, theology, charitable service, prison reform and offender rehabilitation.
The former Tory MP and defence minister was jailed for lying in 1999 and lost everything. But he found God and a new life behind bars, and now helps other inmates and ex-offenders.
