Oberto Grimaldi was an admiral of the Genoese fleet at Damietta and commissioner of Genoa. Grimaldi was one of the four sons of Grimaldo Canella and, therefore, one of the grandsons of Otto Canella .
The House of Grimaldi is the current reigning house of the Principality of Monaco. The house was founded in 1160 by Grimaldo Canella in Genoa and became the ruling house of Monaco when Francesco Grimaldi captured Monaco in 1297. Since then, every Prince of Monaco has been a member of the House of Grimaldi.
Otto's son, Grimaldo (Grimwald), was nominated consul three times, in 1162, 1170 and 1184. He served as the city's ambassador to Morocco in 1169. Grimaldo's son, Oberto, was the first of the family known to use the simple patronymic Grimaldi.

The Church of San Luca was founded in 1188 by Oberto Spinola, on land owned by Oberto Grimaldi, his son-in-law. The façade of the building, rebuilt in the XVII century, still retains the characteristics of the typical genoese church.
