Gangubai Harjeevandas (1928 – 8 September 1977), better known as Gangubai Kothewali or Gangubai Kathiawadi, was an Indian social activist, prostitute and pimp of a brothel in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai during the 1960s.
Gangubai Kathiawadi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical crime drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada. The film stars Alia Bhatt in the title role, alongside Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Indira Tiwari, Seema Pahwa, Jim Sarbh and Ajay Devgn .
Gangubai Kothewali was one of the most dreaded women of Mumbai’s underworld in the 60s. She owned many brothels in Mumbai during the 60s. Gangubai was popularly referred to as the ‘Madam of Kamathipura.’
