Dunhill Records was started in 1964 by Lou Adler, Jay Lasker, Pierre Cossette and Bobby Roberts as Dunhill Productions to release the music of Johnny Rivers on Imperial Records. It became a record label the following year and was distributed by ABC Records .

Beginning as a production company to release Johnny Rivers recordings through Imperial Records in 1964, Dunhill became a full-fledged label a year later. Their distributor, ABC-Paramount, bought the label in 1966, and put their logo next to Dunhill's on their releases.

At Dunhill Records, with producer Lou Adler, they tallied a series of hits with well-written songs, mostly by John Phillips, that proved perfect vehicles for the group’s cascading harmonies, among them “California Dreamin’” (1965), “Monday, Monday” (1966), and “Creeque Alley” (1967).

The first one was by The Rincon Surfside Band titled “Surfside Songbook” as Dunhill D 50001/DS 50001; and the last one was by Murphys Law titled “Urban Renewal” as Dunhill DSD 50194.
