David Nathaniel Spergel is an American theoretical astrophysicist and the Emeritus Charles A. Young Professor of Astronomy on the Class of 1897 Foundation at Princeton University. Since 2021, he has been the President of the Simons Foundation. He is known for his work on the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) project.
I am currently co-chair of the WFIRST science team. WFIRST will study the nature of dark energy, complete the demographic survey of extrasolar planets, characterize the atmospheres of nearby planets and survey the universe with more than 100x the field of view of the Hubble Space Telescope.

I joined the Flatiron Institute in 2016 as founding director of the Center for Computational Astrophysics. In 2021 I became president of the Simons Foundation. My research interests range from the search for planets around nearby stars to the shape of the universe.

Spergel is the author of over 300 refereed papers with over 98,000 citations (Hirsch h=118). He is the first author of the 1st and 3rd most cited papers in physics in the new millennium. Mentorship: Spergel has mentored over 30 PhD students and 35 postdocs. His mentees have been highly successful.
