David’s Early Life. David was born in Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, in the year 2854 (907 BCE), during the era of the prophets.He was the youngest of seven sons, and only 10 generations removed from Judah, one of Jacob 's 12 sons. The biblical author saw the God of Israel at work in David’s story in unique and important ways that made him stand out from among all of Israel’s kings. The stories of David weren’t preserved and crafted merely out of historical interest. This story of David’s humble origins came to epitomize the ideal king.
Having famously killed the Philistine giant Goliath, David was an aide at the court of Saul until the monarch’s jealousy forced David into outlawry. After Saul’s death, David became king of Judah, in the south, while Saul’s eldest surviving son, Ishbosheth, was made king of northern Israel.
