Mito Kōmon (水戸黄門) is a Japanese jidaigeki or period drama that was on prime-time television from 1969 to 2011, making it the longest-running jidaigeki in Japanese television history. [1] [2] The title character is the historic Tokugawa Mitsukuni, former vice- shōgun and retired second daimyō of the Mito Domain.
Manga Mito Kōmon (まんが水戸黄門) is a Japanese shōnen anime television series consisting of 46 episodes directed by Kazuyuki Okasako. Loosely based on real life events of Tokugawa Mitsukuni, it is considered as a sort of remake of the successful jidaigeki drama Mito Kōmon filled with more fantastic elements.
Tokugawa Mitsukuni (徳川 光圀, 11 July 1628 – 14 January 1701), also known as Mito Kōmon (水戸黄門), was a Japanese daimyo who was known for his influence in the politics of the early Edo period.
Overview. A historic figure Tokugawa Mitsukuni, former vice-shogun and retired daimyo of the Mito domain travels through Japan in the guise of Mitsuemon, a retired crêpe merchant from Echigo province, accompanies by his two samurai retainers, fun-loving Sasaki Sukesaburō (Suke-san) and studious Atsumi Kakunoshin (Kaku-san).
