Hwa Chong Junior College is the second junior college, and the first government-aided junior college to be established in Singapore, after National Junior College.
The former Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) was set up in 1974 as the first government-aided junior college offering pre-university education. It offered courses in both the English and Chinese medium before the national restructuring of the curriculum in 1982.
Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) has a rich history of over 100 years. The independent school is the culmination of the watershed merger of The Chinese High School (TCHS) and Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) in 2005.

Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) is an independent secondary educational institution in Bukit Timah, Central Region, Singapore. It was established in 2005 by the merger of The Chinese High School (1919–2004) and Hwa Chong Junior College (1974–2005).

The former Hwa Chong Junior College (HCJC) is a premier junior college in Singapore. Established in 1974, the college is one of the top performing junior colleges in Singapore in the 1990s. The college merged to form the current College Section of Hwa Chong Institution in January 2005 after the introduction of the Integrated Programme.
All Returning Singaporeans (RS) children who wish to apply to Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) for a place in the JC 1 can take part through Direct School Admission (DSA-JC) or participate in the School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans (SPERS- JC/MI) conducted by Ministry of Education.
