    Västerås (/ ˌ v ɛ s t ər ˈ oʊ s / VEST-ər-OHSS, US also /-ˈ ɔː s /-⁠ AWSS, Swedish: [vɛstɛrˈoːs] ⓘ) is a city in central Sweden on the shore of Lake Mälaren in the province of Västmanland, 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Stockholm.

    • Anundshög. Under ten kilometres east of the centre of Västerås is Sweden’s largest barrow (burial mound). This is nine metres in height and 64 metres across and dates back at least 1500 years.
    • Västerås Cathedral. The city’s cathedral was consecrated in the 1200s, and there have been all sorts of extensions and restorations since then. The most recent was in 1958-61, but there’s no shortage of sumptuous art and architecture from the middle ages and Renaissance.
    • Vallby Open Air Museum. Along the river from the city centre is a classic Swedish outdoor museum. This attraction has gathered up to 40 traditional buildings from around Västmanland County and brought them here piece by piece.
    • Kungsbyn Animal Park. Highly recommended if you’re in Västerås with younger members of the family, the Kungsbyn Animal Park is a small but well-run zoo.

    • Anundshög – Historic Site. Anundshög is located just outside the City of Västerås. It is Sweden’s largest burial mound measuring over 64 meters across and nine meters high.
    • Björnö – Island to Explore. Björnö is Västerås city’s main island. It’s connected to the main land with a little bridge, and is very easy to find by following the signs posted everywhere.
    • Botaniska Tradgarden – Gardens. In the centre of Västerås near the Rudbeckian School and the cathedral is Sweden’s oldest garden to be planted specifically for botany students.
