Story. 1854 illustration of Jack climbing the beanstalk by George Cruikshank. Jack, a poor country boy, trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into a massive, towering beanstalk reaching up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds himself in the castle of an unfriendly giant.
The next day, when Jack woke up in the morning and looked out of the window, he saw that a huge beanstalk had grown from his magic beans! He climbed up the beanstalk and reached a kingdom in the sky. There lived a giant and his wife.
Jack exchanges the family cow for five beans. His mother is furious and throws them out of the window. The beans sprout into a stalk and jack climbs up to the sky and the land of giants.
