There are many subtle but significant differences between the two species. They can be identified by their snout shape, size and color. Typically, alligators are dark green or black with u-shaped snouts. Crocodiles are light green, brown or light grey and have v-shaped snouts as well as visible bottom teeth.
But there are some easy ways to tell them apart. The first is the shape of the snout. In alligators it’s broad and U-shaped, while in crocodiles it’s narrow and V-shaped. Next are the teeth. In the case of alligators, the lower teeth are typically not visible when the mouth is shut.
The snout or jaw shape is perhaps the best way to tell an alligator apart from a crocodile. The jaws of an alligator tend to be more broad, with the end of their snout in the shape of a U if you are looking at the jaws from above. Crocodiles have much more narrow snouts, almost in the shape of a V.
