Feb 6, 2023 · Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is rapidly evolving the ways navies’ movements are exposed to the enemy. And Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the first major war of the OSINT age. OSINT itself is not new. But the ways in which it permeates the conflict and grips the world’s attention is.
Naval intelligence will have to contend with open-source intelligence because of its extensive inclusion in press reporting, and commanders will continue to require their intelligence officers to comment on what they see in the media.
This vast trove of open-source information can be synthesized into open-source intelligence (OSInt) if it can be analyzed properly, but that is a big if. Without advanced software, there will never be enough time or personnel to sift through the volume of available open-source information.
