Tan Kah Kee ( Chinese: 陳嘉庚; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tân Ka-kiⁿ; also spelled as Chen Jiageng; 21 October 1874 – 12 August 1961) was a Chinese businessman, investor, and philanthropist active in Singapore and the Chinese cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, Xiamen, and Guangzhou .
Early life. Tan was born in a Hoklo peasant family of seven in Jimei of Tong An in Fujian, China. Born into of very limited means, and orphaned young, he had little chance of an education before he made his way to Nanyang in 1916 together with his brothers, at the age of 18.

History. On October 21, 1874, Tan Kah Kee ( Chinese :陈嘉庚) was born in Jimei, Tong'an County, southeast China's Fujian Province. He went to Singapore when he was 16 years old to work for his father's store. Then, Tan started his own store and built his business empire not long after.
