The Stone Forest or Shilin (Chinese: 石 林; pinyin: Shílín) is a notable set of limestone formations about 500 km 2 located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China, near Shilin approximately 90 km (56 mi) from the provincial capital Kunming.
Since 2007 the Stone Forest has been a UNESCO world heritage site. Visitors can wander through the site and marvel at the sheer variety of rock formations some of which have been named after the animal, plant or person that they resemble.
The Stone Forest is by far the #1 attraction in Kunming, a fact not lost on the local tour groups. Over 3 million tourists visit the Stone Forest every year, mostly big Chinese tour groups on big tour buses.
