Edith Versus the Bank is the eighth episode of Season 9 of All in the Family, and the 189th overall episode in the series. Written by Mel Tolkin and Larry Rhine, the episode, which was directed by Paul Bogart, originally aired on CBS-TV on November 19, 1978.

No one will loan Edith money to buy a new television because she has no job and is just a housewife.

Edith wants to buy a new color television set for Archie for their 30th anniversary. However, she is denied credit twice: once at the store, and again when she tries to sign for a loan at the bank; when the bank's loan officer, Mr. Gordon Faraday (John Harkins) rejects Edith loan request after she reveals that she only earns $2.65 an hour working part time, he cites that it isn't enough to cover the loan, then she cites her work as a housewife, as he cites in a rather chauvinistic way, saying that her housework isn't "real work", as he then tells her if she fills out the loan paper and have Archie sign it, they'd approve it in 5 minutes, but she declines, and then tells him that she'd close all three accounts she had with that bank and withdraw the money and put them all into another bank, despite "substantial penalties for early withdrawal".

Edith, angry and offended by Mr. Faraday's reason for rejecting her loan request, and the comments about her housework, then goes back home and asks Archie for permission to borrow $500, but when she won't say why, he won't let her have the money either, causing Edith to become extremely angry, as she thinks about it, and then after Archie equates her work to be worth $1 a week, she cites "See a dollar a week for 52 weeks-- 'cause there's 52 weeks in a year-- comes to $52 a year." as Archie responds, "Well, that's close, yeah.", as she then asks him "And we've been married 30 years, right?" as Archie replies "Yeah."

Edith responds, "That's ten threes. And ten 52s is $520. And three 520s comes to $1,560... Which you owe me!" Edith then tells Archie "Now, let's make a deal. If you pay me right now $500, I'll let you keep the $1,060 that's left!", as Archie then bribes Stephanie, giving her a dime to find out as to why Edith wanted to borrow money from him; when Stephanie reveals why, he asks why didn't she reveal it toย him in the first place, as he then, after confronting Edith again, caves in and agrees to give her the money for the TV set as she gets him to pay her $5.00 a week allowance instead of the $1 a week he equated her work to be worth.
