So many reasons! You could live in Amsterdam as we do. Perhaps you are a local or an expat that lives in the Netherlands and it’s easy to get to Amsterdam as a starting point.

    • Gouda. Known for its eponymous and namesake cheese, Gouda (pronounced “HOW-duh”), a lively market town in the storybook-like southern Netherlands between The Hague and Rotterdam, rewards gourmands and history buffs alike.
    • Pyramid of Austerlitz. Just outside Utrecht is one of the more bizarre and fascinating relics from the Napoleonic Era that is a certifiable must-see in the Netherlands.
    • Bloemendaal Beach. Even in the summer, a dip in the North Sea is not for the faint-hearted, but the Dutch coast is one of the best places in the Netherlands to unwind and–quite literally–chill out.
    • Giethoorn. While the entire country is inundated with towns and villages crisscrossed by canals, the village of Giethoorn is one of the only places to visit in the Netherlands that is entirely car-free.

    • Den Burg & Texel Island, North Holland. Den Burg is the capital of the province Texel in North Holland or Noord Holland. Texel is an island that features a number of small, quaint towns that make for great getaway trips.
    • Dusseldorf, Germany. This is one of my favorite getaways from Amsterdam. It’s great because you can visit a completely new country and culture along the way.
    • Cologne (Koln) and Northwest Germany. Next are the other parts of Northwest Germany, including the large city of Cologne (Köln). I was able to visit both Cologne and Dusseldorf in 1.5 days.
    • Utrecht. Utrecht is a short, easy trip from Amsterdam. This is for you if you are looking for an easy weekend trip. Utrecht is sort of like a mini-Amsterdam in a way.

This ancient city has been the religious center of the country since the eighth century. It was once the most important city in Holland until it was surpassed by Amsterdam in the Dutch Golden Age (17th century).
