A cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is a mathematical technique that provides a way to detect errors in transmitted data by appending a special code, called a checksum, to the original information. This checksum is then recalculated at the receiving end to verify the integrity of the data.

Now when it is received we divide by 9, and if the answer is zero, there are no errors, and we can ignore the last digit.

[1] [2] Blocks of data entering these systems get a short check value attached, based on the remainder of a polynomial division of their contents.

Of course it is a little more complicated because it divides by a polynomial but the principle of using a remainder as a "short value representing the data" to check it for errors in the same way stands.
