I didn't know that and and I was familiar with both words. For some reason, though, probably due to interference with my own language, I tend to see "candidature" as the person running for election, while "candidacy" sounds to me like a process .

In ordinary English (AE) we "submit" applications, which is probably what you see on the little buttons on English-language web sites that you use to send information to the site. "Put forward" seems pretentious and probably counter-productive to my AE way of thinking.

The expression was used recently in a statement by a political party (MPF) in which this type of candidacy is refused and rejected by the party. It seems to be a candidacy based solely on things seen and heard, without any practical experience to back it up.

The idea behind "candidature spontanée" is that one sends an application as a personal initiative, as a starting point, to possibly enter a selection process to be held at a later date, etc.. "Spontaneous" sounds strange to me, it sounds like a direct translation.
