  6. PRINCIPAL BUILDING Cholmondeley Castle (listed grade II*) is a crenellated sandstone gothick building. It stands on a low hill above its level park, with panoramic views to the east. Designed by the fourth Earl working with the local architect William Turner of Whitchurch, it was built between 1801 and 1804.

  7. Mansion, 1801-4 by the first Marquis of Cholmondeley (with William Turner of Whitchurch) but in 1817-19 Robert Smirke added a number of towers and turrets and gave the building its present castle-like appearance.
