In some cases, I think "occasional rain" may be the same as "showers" when talking about brief periods of rain. "There will be showers throughout the day." is basically the same as "There will be occasional rain throughout the day."

  2. Jan 8, 2022 · London. English - South-East England. Jan 8, 2022. #6. An occasional dessert is a dessert now and then: you have a dessert on the 3rd, then another on the 7th, a third one on the 10th perhaps. 'A (n)' is spread out over days. It's like having a cup of tea every morning: it's only one, but it's one every morning.

  3. Mar 16, 2008 · Mar 16, 2008. #1. I am looking for an adverb of frequency that fits somewhere between often and sometimes/occasionally . Let's say, about half of the time, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less, but not often enough to call it often or frequently. My original sentence is: The prose has occasionally an amateurish feel.

  4. Feb 15, 2015 · A working paper can refer to an article that is not finalized. Often the author will distribute it to colleagues for comments and additions before publishing the final version. An occasional pape r is an article published in a context that usually publishes on a certain schedule or with a specific focus. The occasional paper is not in line with ...

For me, 'sometimes' means about 50% of the time, maybe 40% of the time, but 'occasionally' means quite rarely, 15%-20% of the time. Agreed. AE Hard to nail words like these down, though.

It is this meaning of occasional: 1 occurring infrequently or irregularly. Although it is an adjective describing the chair, it really tells us that the selling occurs "infrequently or irregularly".

  7. Mar 20, 2011 · To me, May occasionally contain seeds can mean that some watermelons do, some don't -- and the some that do may contain a whole lot of seeds. While May contain occasional seeds means that the watermelon you're holding might have seeds, but if it does, there won't be too many (so don't write us about it or contact your lawyer).

  8. Mar 7, 2010 · Mar 7, 2010. #2. Occasional is an adjective. It describes a person, place, or thing. Occasionally is an adverb. It describes an action. For example: "I help answer the occasional English question on this website." "My family occasionally goes to the theater."

  9. Dec 10, 2009 · I came across this sentence: Apart from the occasional article, he hadn't published anything for several years now. "He" in this context is a full professor, a PhD, so I guess "the" here is to indicate that those articles are in his plan, somewhat compulsory. But then I cannot explain to myself why article is in singular form.

  10. Jun 30, 2010 · Jun 28, 2010. #4. George French said: "on an occasional basis" is a very common example of verbiage. Cut it out. GF.. Use occasionally. But George, not having read the actual article, I have to stick up for "verbiage" like this. When writing an article, it can be worse to constantly repeat a word.
