Jan 8, 2015 · Osimo was built on a sandstone hill; tunnels were first excavated by the Picentes, a local pre-roman tribe, and were expanded several times throughout history; nowadays there are over 9km of tunnels, alleyways and passageways, a subterranean labyrinth twisting, corkscrewing, convoluting around itself on different levels, reaching so far below that the life above is nothing but a memory.
In Osimo itself, the "Grotte (caves) del Cantinone" are open quite regularly, others only in summer, others only through advanced reservation. So our experience was limited to the first ones, the "Cantinone". The caves lie for the most part under the Franciscan church of S. Giuseppe.

Osimo is a town and comune of the Marche region of Italy, in the province of Ancona. Osimo retains a portion of its ancient town wall (2nd century BCE). Under the town is a large series of tunnels with esoteric bas-reliefs. The town hall contains a number of statues found on the site of the ancient forum. The new castle (1489), of which parts remain today, was built by Baccio Pontelli.
