The last day in John refers to the second coming and the universal resurrection of the dead. Oct 10, 2014 · So the purpose of the author is to teach that one of the prerogatives of the Messiah is to be the one to raise the dead on the last day. The emphasis each time Jesus is presented as saying "I will raise him up on the last day" is on the "I," because per John 6:39 it is the Father's will for Jesus to be the one to do the raising.
