Archway is an area of north London, England, in the London Borough of Islington 3.8 miles (6 km) north of Charing Cross. It straddles the A1 and is named after a local landmark, the high, single-arched Highgate Archway Bridge which crossed the road in a cutting to the north.

Archway. Archway takes its name from the Highgate Archway, a John Nash-designed viaduct to carry Hornsey Lane over a cutting through a hill linking Holloway Road with the Great North Road, and bypassing Highgate Hill. Archway Road, a toll road, and the viaduct opened in 1813.
Located in the north of Central London, Archway is a predominantly residential neighborhood. It's got a great selection of flats and some modest terraced homes, but if you're looking for more elbow room you're not going to find many detached houses here.

I digress. Archway is named after the large bridge that crosses the A1 as it heads into London. The road that goes over the A1 is Hornsey Lane and goes from Highgate to Crouch End. There are lovely views looking South towards the City of London and Canary Wharf from the bridge.
