David Chipperfield was appointed a member of the Order of the UK's Companions of Honour in 2021, Commander of Spain's Orden de Isabel la Católica and member of Germany's Orden Pour le Mérite für Wissenschaften und Künste in 2022 for his services to architecture internationally.
Founded in 1985, David Chipperfield Architects has an international reputation for expertise in design process and for the enduring quality of its projects. Working across the private and public sectors, the practice’s diverse portfolio includes celebrated cultural, residential, education, retail, workplace and civic projects.
Through this project David Chipperfield Architects developed working methods that the practice continues to use today, both in terms of an approach to dealing with historic fabric, with confronting national and public expectations, and in complex stakeholder engagement.
Following the competition win to rebuild Neues Museum on Berlin’s Museum Island, David Chipperfield Architects Berlin was established in 1998. Over the past twenty-five years, the Berlin office has continuously grown and is presently working on a wide-ranging portfolio of over 30 projects throughout the world.
From the outset, David Chipperfield Architects London has maintained a close connection to architectural culture, sharing its first office space in Marylebone with 9H Gallery. The office has since occupied studios in Camden, Waterloo and Aldwych, and has recently moved to a new home in Fitzrovia.
