Malabar district, also known as the Malayalam district, bears its name from the hilly nature of many areas in the district.[1] It was one of the two districts of Madras presidency, which lied in the western coast (Malabar coast) of India, the other being the South Canara.

On 27 June 2015, Viswanathan was admitted to Fortis Malar hospital in Chennaiwith breathing difficulties. He had been undergoing a treatment at the hospital for some time. He died at on 14 July 2015 due to age-related ailments, three weeks after he had turned 87. He was cremated with full state honours at Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium.
