    On 27 June 2015, Viswanathan was admitted to Fortis Malar hospital in Chennaiwith breathing difficulties. He had been undergoing a treatment at the hospital for some time. He died at on 14 July 2015 due to age-related ailments, three weeks after he had turned 87. He was cremated with full state honours at Besant Nagar Electric Crematorium.
