Hohenschwangau Castle (German: Schloss Hohenschwangau) is a 19th-century palace in southern Germany. It was built by King Maximilian II of Bavaria, and was the childhood residence of his son, King Ludwig II of Bavaria.
The Bavarian royal family spent many weeks a year in Hohenschwangau. The castle chronicle, written by the respective castellan, enumerates princely guests, reports on festivals, splendid jousting, mountain fires glowing from far and wide, and excursions and "parthias" of the royal family.
At the Ticket Center Hohenschwangau you can purchase admission tickets - subject to availability - for the Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau as well as the Museum of the Bavarian Kings exclusively for the same day of your visit.
From 1833 to 1837 Crown Prince Maximilian rebuilt the medieval Schwanstein Castle into a new Gothic style of Hohenschwangau Castle. The external appearance was inspired by the medieval castle. The interior from the 19th century is still preserved until today.
A pleasant walk from the parking area (car parking is chargeable) with views across the lake & to Schloss Neuschwanstein. The gardens are worth a stroll whilst you wait.
