Almost everyone will tell you that all Mad Max movies are self contained and separate but to understand Beyond Thunderdome better you absolutely have to put it in context of the rest of the original trilogy. That way you'll understand the upbeat tone and what George Miller was going for. So in short: MM1 was pessimistic.

So while Beyond Thunderdome initially was a separate film, and largely has a tonal shift compared to the other movies in the series, that’s not necessarily the reason Max is different. Beyond Thunderdome is supposed to represent the end of Max’s character arc for the original trilogy.

There's surface level reasons and deeper reasons that I'll get into in a sec, but the most obvious ones are: Hollywood's financial backing that resulted in strange decisions like putting in now painfully dated 80's pop in this film. PG rating so the film sells more tickets.

But yeah, the movie is really underrated, mostly by people who expected more action like in Road Warrior, but fact of the matter is - Mad Max is also, or rather - mainly - a story about Max and his redemption. And this film delivered on that for sure.
Apr 23, 2023 · Albedo101. Thunderdome has its flaws, but on the other hand, it has elements that make it a very significant part of the lore. I absolutely love how Max (de-)evolved visually as a character, the monkey, the camels, and the new interceptor masked as a caravan wagon. It'll take 30 years to fully explain that part.
