Feb 9, 2018 · A shadow is a shape of one thing (a person, or tree, or house for example), where it is blocked from the sun. Looks like for Longman they are interchangeable. Look at these two examples: "She was sitting in the shade of a large oak tree.”. "the long dark shadow of an old oak tree”.

"In the shadow" refers to a specific shadow. I'd expect a sentence with "shadow" to connect the shadow to the object that casts it, as in the following: Outside the house was a huge old tree.
