Now it's the final resting place of as many as 100 suicide victims every year. At the foot of Mount Fuji, the highest mountain peak in Japan, sprawls a 30-square-kilometer forest called Aokigahara.

The forest floor consists of volcanic rock, which is hardened lava that flowed from Mount Fuji when the volcano had a major eruption in the year 864.
Aokigahara Forest is this locations proper name. Though it's also known as "Suicide Forest" and "Sea of Trees". The former because many Japanese have come here in the past to commit suicide. The latter because when viewed from above, the tree tops swaying in the wind resemble the choppy waters of an ocean.
The Aokigahara Forest is located to the north of Mount Fuji, which grew over the lava bedrock following the volcano's last major eruption in the 9th century.
