Feb 27, 2023 · I think Deepl is better at translating. I was doing translation as a job for a couple years, and of the big four (google, deepl, Baidu, youdao) I think google is overall the best. DeepL maybe for some legal things. Baidu and youdao are just not close. I also tried Bing and it was even worse than the Chinese ones.

Orignally I did this by cross referencing translations between several different online translators like DeepL, Google, Baidu, etc and a chinese dictionary (arch chinese), since I do not natively speak chinese.

Feb 15, 2023 · What I find really interesting is that these LLMs weren't explicitly trained on Chinese/English translation pairs - just an unstructured pile of Chinese and English texts. Somehow they learned the actual meaning behind the words and how to map from one language to the other. That is to be expected TBH.

For instance, if the character you're hovering over is a part of a longer phrase or name （习近平, say) the add-on will detect that and translate it as the 主席's name, rather than three nonsense characters.
