He also directed nine films between 1971 and 2000. In 1971, he won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival for his film The Friends.
Gérard Blain is still better known as an actor - mainly through his brief flirtation with the French New Wave - but once you have seen some of the films he directed you realise that his real talents were behind the camera.
