Jan 4, 2017 · Roots was started in 1973 by Michael Budman and Don Green — both USA natives and Detroit locals. Both attended Camp Tamakwa in the Algonquin Park, Canada. Michael spent his summer here as a counselor, canoeing instructor and camp director for over 13 years, and Don was both an attendee and staff member in the 1960s.
Our Story. Roots was founded by Michael Budman and Don Green, two city kids who met at summer camp in Algonquin Park, where they first fell in love with the ideals and beauty of Canada. Starting from a little cabin, they created Roots, inspired by the experience of travelling from their city homes into the heart of Canada's wilderness.

Outdoorsy clothes such as hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants, and other athletic apparel, became the theme when Budman and Green became clothing entrepreneurs. Today, many Roots stores have a camp cabin feel with exposed wood beams, wooden fixtures, canoes and and wall-mounted canoe paddles. Budman still spends summers in Algonquin Park.
