Singer Dave Pirner sat behind the drums but in a matter of years — after a name change and the addition of drummer Grant Young — he moved to the front playing guitar. Minneapolis was the heart of blue collar garage punk, music that became synonymous with the hometown bands the Replacements and Husker Du. Soul Asylum rose on the heels of those bands.
