This film is part tongue-in-cheek Western comedy and part serious horse opera. There are plenty of gunfights and other action, but also plenty of comic relief. Wayne plays a U.S. Marshal in a style reminiscent of the Marshal Rooster Cogburn persona in "True Grit" and "Rooster Cogburn (and the Lady)".

A tough Marshal has a difficult task when his two sons join a gang and rob a bank. J.D. Cahill is the toughest U.S. Marshal they've got, just the sound of his name makes bad guys stop in their tracks, so when his two young boys want to get his attention they decide to rob a bank.
