Unlike most reviewers and commentators, I find Chabrol's early films his most interesting. LES BONNES FEMMES and L'OEIL DU MALIN, along with the nearly magnificent Occupation drama LIGNE DE DÉMARCATION are some of the best French films of their time, regardless of connection to The Nouvelle Vague (which otherwise gave us many superb examples by different directors).

The Third Lover (original title: L'Œil du malin), also known as The Eye of Evil, is a 1962 drama directed by Claude Chabrol. It is one of Chabrol's first films to include social criticism on bourgeoisie lifestyles that would become one of his trademarks in later films.

Mar 15, 2020 · The Third Lover - The Final Word: The Third Lover is prime Chabrol and, as such, very much worth seeing. It's a well-made thriller with some great performances, a few neat twists and some excellent, and a very atmospheric, cinematography. Kino's Blu-ray looks and sounds great and the commentary contains some good information. Highly recommended.
