What is a Wild Boar? Wild boars are pig-like creatures that can be found throughout the world. Though native to parts of Europe and Asia, they have been introduced on every continent except Antarctica and their numbers have greatly increased. Wild boars are covered in coarse dark fur, and males in particular have prominent tusk-like canine teeth.
Wild boar have stocky, powerful bodies with a double layer of grey-brown fur – the top layer harsh, bristly hair; the under layer much softer. Mature males have tusks that protrude from the mouth. Piglets are a lighter ginger-brown, with stripes on their coat for camouflage. Large animals, wild boar can stand up to 80cm at the shoulder.
Wild Boar Behaviour. Wild boars live in groups called sounders. Sounders typically contain around 20 animals, but groups of over 50 have been seen. In a typical sounder there are two or three sows and their offspring; adult male Wild Boars are not part of the sounder outside of the autumnal breeding season and are usually found alone.
