Feb 3, 2023 · Tweet was her childhood nickname. • As a teenager in the early ’90s, Tweet was a member of the all-girl trio Sugah, which was part of producer Devante Swing's Swing Mob collective. During the audition, she met Missy Elliott and Timbaland, who would prove instrumental in her later solo success.
Today, as Tweet celebrates the release of her third full-length album Charlene, she remembers how stress fueled her habitual drinking and smoking three packs of cigarettes a day, leading to her 10-year hiatus from music. “I just knew that I wasn’t happy,” Tweet said during her interview at Blackdoctor.org.
Tweet (born Charlene L. Keys on March 4, 1971) is an American R&B and neo soul singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Tweet was born in Rochester, New York and grew up singing in the church along with her parents and her four older siblings (three brothers, Tom, Cedric and Lonnie, and one sister, Sundra).
On April 26 and 27, 2008, Tweet along with Bilal, Dwele and German singer Joy Denalane performed with The Dresden Soul Symphony in Dresden, Germany. The quartet reinterpreted soul hits and combined them with classical music. An album The Dresden Soul Symphony and DVD were later released on October 24, 2008.
