Jun 14, 2020 · Peter Collinson (1936-80 lung cancer) was a British director who died at the relatively young age of 44. He directed the much lauded and popular The Italian Job (1969) which over the years, when I asked young British fellows what their favourite film was – it always seemed to be The Italian Job. Things have changed a lot since then.
His break into features came in 1967 with The Penthouse. Though it seemed to follow in the footsteps of Harold Pinter and Joe Orton, this menacing thriller was condemned by critics as a derivative and exploitative mix of sex and violence.
Although almost nobody outside the movie business has even heard of him, Collinson is probably the hottest young director in England right now. Stories of his working methods in "The Penthouse" are related by other directors with a touch of awe.
