The album, Battle Hymns MMXI, was drummer Donnie Hamzik's first studio recording with Manowar since the original 1982 Battle Hymns release. Orson Welles having died 25 years before, the narration during "Dark Avenger" was recorded by Sir Christopher Lee .

Narration in ''Dark Avenger'' by Orson Welles. "William's Tale" is a bass solo version of the William Tell theme from the William Tell opera, originally written by Gioachino Rossini. Manowar re-recorded this album in 2010, and released it as Battle Hymns MMXI .
