On April 10 th 1912, 12-year-old Louis Garrett* and his 14-year-old sister Jamila set sail from Marseilles on what would prove to be the biggest adventure of their lives.
To help them assimilate to their new home the family name was changed from Yārid to Garrett and Ilyās became known as Louis Nicholas. Louis worked for his brother Isaac and initially lived with him at his home in Fresno, California.
