A young engineer, Lucien Rombeau, is sent to the Sahara by the oil company that employs him, which wants to put an end to drilling that it considers unproductive. He ends up agreeing with the chief prospector, who refuses to stop the work and is convinced that prospecting will not be in vain.

Perdu en plein Sahara, un derryck de forage se dresse dans la soli-tude. Le chef des prospecteurs, surnommé « La Vieille », voit survenir de Paris un jeune ingénieur envoyé par la Société qui finance le sondage chargé de le prévenir qu'il doit interrompre les travaux, ceux-ci étant devenus inutiles et coûteux.
