Ralph Spence (November 4, 1890 – November 21, 1949) was an American screenwriter and playwright. Born in Key West, Florida in 1890, he wrote for more than 120 films between 1912 and 1946. His play, The Gorilla, was produced on Broadway in 1925, and was the basis for several films.
At the height of his career, in 1927, he signed a contract with MGM to write the titles for 26 films, reportedly at a rate of $5,000 per picture (“Ralph Spence Signs” 4). However, there is currently not a single article or book chapter detailing his contributions to screenwriting.
