Clarence Edward Mulford (3 February 1883 – 10 May 1956) was an American writer, best known as the creator of the character Hopalong Cassidy . Biography. Mulford was born in Streator, Illinois.

Clarence Edward Mulford was the author of Hopalong Cassidy, written in 1904. He wrote it in Fryeburg, Maine, United States, and the many stories and 28 novels were followed by radio, feature film, television, and comic book versions. Clarence was born in Streator, Illinois. He died of complications from surgery in Portland, Maine.

- ON A STRANGE RANGE. Two tired but happy punchers rode into the coast town and dismounted in front of the best hotel. Putting up their horses as quickly as possible they made arrangements for sleeping quarters and then hastened out to attend to business.
- THE REBOUND. A man moaned and stirred restlessly in a bunk, muttering incoherently. A stampeded herd was thundering over him, the grinding hoofs beating him slowly to death.
- DICK MARTIN STARTS SOMETHING. Dick Martin slowly turned, leaned his back against the bar, and languidly regarded a group of Mexicans at the other end of the room.
- JOHNNY ARRIVES. Meanwhile Hopalong and Red quarrelled petulantly and damned the erring Johnny with enthusiastic abandon, while Dent smiled at them and joked; but his efforts at levity made little impression on the irate pair.
Now for the first time I decided to go back to his roots and the written word of "Clarence E. Mulford". This was the greatest discovery in my lifetime joy of Hoppy! Mulford had the true gift of spinning a western tale and giving us the Bar-20 and all those wonderful colorful characters.
