    Tony Gayton is an American motion picture writer and producer. He is the co-creator of Hell on Wheels with his brother Joe Gayton. They are also the series co-show runners. Tony is an Executive Producer and writer for the show. He has also worked on the films Murder by Numbers (2002), The Salton Sea (2002), and Faster (2010).

    Early life

    Graduated from Merritt Island High School, Florida in 1977. Gayton is a graduate of the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he received the Jack Nicholson Writing Scholarship.

    Career

    After graduating, he worked as a production assistant for John Milius. Gayton has been a professional screenwriter for over ten years, working both by himself and with his brother, Joe Gayton. Gayton also directed the critically acclaimed documentary film Athens, GA: Inside/Out, which featured the bands R.E.M. and the B-52's as well as the eccentric folk artist Reverend Howard Finster. Tony wrote the films Murder by Numbers (2002) and The Salton Sea (2002). Murder by Numbers is a 2002 psychological thriller film produced and directed by Barbet Schroeder. It stars Sandra Bullock, Ben Chaplin, Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt. It is loosely based on the Leopold and Loeb case. It was made for approximately $50 million and took over $56 million at the box office. is a 2002 American neo-noir film starring Val Kilmer and Vincent D'Onofrio directed by D. J. Caruso. The film received mixed reviews and failed to recoup its $18 million budget. Joe and Tony co-wrote the 2006 television feature Southern Comfort. The film was directed by Greg Yaitaines and starred Madeleine Stowe, Eric Roberts and Lee Tergesen. It was about the wife of a Southern mobster takes over the family business when her husband is sent to jail. Tony wrote and directed the documentary Two Headed Cow (2006).
