In 1997, Bahian percussionist Giba Gonçalves created the first chapter in Paris of what has become Batala Mundo, a worldwide project promoting and sharing Afro-Brazilian percussion specifically samba-reggae which originates from Salvador da Bahia, Brazil.
Giba Gonçalves is the musical director of the band Cortejo Afro, who play a distinct mixture of African rhythms and electronic beats and pop, known as the “Afro-Bahian musical revolution”. Giba Gonçalves has also composed music for film/documentary “Code Unknown” by Michael Haneke, starring Juliette Binoche (MK2 Productions).
Batalá was founded in Paris in 1997 by Giba Gonçalves, a Bahian percussionist with links to Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, Muzenza, Male Debale, Jimmy Cliff, Tupi Nago, and Kaoma. Batala currently has over 45 groups in 17 countries and a worldwide membership of over 1,500 percussionists.
