His musical career began at the age of six as a banjolele-playing singer at childrens’ matinees. By the 1950s and early 60s he was a member of Britain’s first ever boy band The King Brothers, one of the most successful pop groups of that era and the youngest Variety act to play the London Palladium.
Group leader Denis King later became an award-winning composer for television, film, and musicals; among other things, he wrote the theme music for The Adventures of Black Beauty and Lovejoy. Michael King was married to the actress Carol White , with whom he had two sons, Sean and Stephen.
