Cy Coleman (born Seymour Kaufman; June 14, 1929 – November 18, 2004) was an American composer, songwriter, and jazz pianist. [1] Life and career. Coleman was born Seymour Kaufman in New York City, to Eastern European Jewish parents, and was raised in the Bronx. [1] .
Cy Coleman was a Tony Award-winning composer who wrote musicals such as Sweet Charity, Barnum and City of Angels. He also played jazz piano and sang his own songs at Feinstein's at the Regency in 2004.
Cy Coleman's pre-Broadway career brought its share of highlights as well. It all began when, between the tender ages of six and nine, he was to be heard with some regularity playing the piano in Carnegie Hall, Town Hall and Steinway Hall.
