Benjamin Ignatius Hayes (February 14, 1815 – August 4, 1877) was an American pioneer who was the first judge of the district court that served Los Angeles, San Diego and San Bernardino counties in California. His seminal rulings are still cited in that state's courts.
Benjamin Ignatius Hayes (1815-1877) was a Maryland lawyer living in Missouri in 1849 when he decided to make the overland journey to California. There he became a leader of the Los Angeles bar. Pioneer notes (1929) is based on Hayes's diaries.
Sep 14, 2017 · Benjamin Hayes, shown in 1849, fought first as a lawyer and then as a judge to protect all of early-day Los Angeles’s citizens. He sought to protect the land rights of Californios and the rights of minorities. Over those 12 years, the judge rode circuit through the countryside.
